Story Maps Created by Margaret Walton: An Introduction
A few years ago, Dr. Koe met student and Alabama native, Margaret Walton at Noccalula Falls in Gadsden, AL. Margaret was working on her master’s degree and working at the Falls. Her areas of study and interest corresponded with the work Dr. Koe hopes to accomplish through AgroshareMD, and we immediately contracted her to create some interactive maps, dubbed Story Maps, for the website. We wanted to provide a more interesting way to illustrate topics such as food deserts in our state and offer solutions such as maps of farmers’ markets and local sustainable farms. Ms. Walton’s story maps are the perfect tool to do this.
Currently, Margaret is pursuing her PhD in Geography at the University of Knoxville in Tennessee. She uses ArcGIS software, a passion for food justice and a deep understanding of the complex history of the Southern Appalachians to create detailed maps and regional research. We have continued our partnership with her and hope to offer more amazing resources for you in the future!
